The flat, arable lands of France around Calais and Boulogne gradually change to the majestic mountains of the Pyrenees to the South and Alps to the South East. Towns like Amiens and its battlefield memorials, Orlean and its splendid cathedral, and The Loire Valley are all worth visiting. The industrial heartland around Toulouse (Airbus Industries), the old Roman town of Cahors on the river Lot, Limoges, and of course the French Riviera are more reasons to visit and tour France. Low price car rental is available by clicking on the links above or below.

Try French Wine in the Bordeaux region, tour the limestone hills of Provence, view the Bayeux tapestry and the magnificent Bayeux cathedral. The gothic abbey on the island of Mont St-Michel lauded by Maupassant is a must see. Dijon leads to Grenoble and Chamonix bringing in to view the Alps and Mont Blanc.

France MapThe River Seine splits Paris in two. The right bank (north side) is where the great architecture and boulevards are to be found, including The Louvre and Beaubourg museum. The Louvre was opened in 1793, Napoleon filled it with art collections taken during his military campaigns. The Sully wing is where the Oriental and Egyptian Treasures are.

The Pompidou Centre designed by Richard Rogers is a high-tech building, very popular. Other Paris visits for tourists include The Marais, The Opera, Les Halles, The Latin Quarter, St Germain, and of course The Eiffel Tower.

History - The Gauls occupied France from 1500BC, the Greeks settled on the Mediterranean coast in the 7th Century BC, The Romans conquered Gaul around 120BC. The Merovingian Dynasty ruled during the dark ages, (6-8th century) then Charlemagne built a realm, on his death in 814 the west portion of this became France. In 1180 Philip II seized Normandy, recovering territory occupied by the Angevin Kings of England. In 1337 Edward III claimed the French Throne, starting the hundred years war. The late 16th century saw the beginning of the Bourbon dynasty, In the 17th Richelieu and Mazarin under Louis XIV saw France become centralised and more powerful. However in the 18th Century France lost its colonies in India and Canada, although it was to be the end of the 19th before France realised the greatest extent of its empire, (including Indochina, South Pacific Islands and substantial parts of North Africa).
